Matthias K. Schwarz, PhD

Dr. Schwarz holds a PhD in bioorganic chemistry from the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, ETH, Zürich. His doctoral thesis on the biosynthesis of diterpenes in Ginkgo biloba was awarded the medal of ETH-Z in 1995. He then worked at Affymax Research Institute in Palo Alto, CA/USA, where he developed new methodologies for solid-phase synthesis of encoded combinatorial libraries. He then went on to join Serono in Geneva, CH where he contributed to building and leading a chemistry department and a small molecule drug discovery effort from scratch. After the take-over by Merck KGaA, he was promoted to global head of chemistry, and then global head of NCE-research. During his 20 years spent in the Biotech and Pharma industry, he has gained a deep insight in people, project and collaboration management, and has championed large organizational transformations.
He is author on more than 30 papers, and fluently communicates in five languages. Of (Swiss-)German mother tongue, he holds the two highest language diplomas in English and French, the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE-C2), Diplôme approfondi de la langue française (DALF-C2).
